Andrew Gillum focuses on northeast Florida and picks up endorsements

by | Mar 29, 2018

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum is busy this week in northeast Florida in an effort to gain footing in that part of the state for his bid to be Florida’s next governor.

Gillum is spending the day in Jacksonville holding various events, including a fundraiser later this evening. Earlier this week he was in Volusia County where he met with that county’s Democratic executive committee.

On Thursday morning, Gillum’s campaign released a list of endorsements from eight Volusia County elected officials, including Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry, Palatka Mayor Terrill Hill and Volusia County Council Member At-Large and former state Rep. Joyce Cusack.

“I’m deeply honored to have such strong support in Daytona Beach and Volusia County. These elected officials know that now, more than ever, our working people need progressive solutions to truly address the issues facing their constituents,” Gillum said of the endorsements.

Recent polls have shown Gillum in either second or third place of the four announced Democrats in the race. consistently shown King at the bottom of the list of Democrats who are currently seeking their party’s nomination for governor in August–including former Miami Beach mayor Philip Levine, former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham and Orlando area businessman Chris King.

The Capitolist’s HorseRace Index, which measures the race using a weighted average formula, has Gillum currently in third place trailing Levine and Graham.

Gillum bills himself as a progressive candidate. The news release issued Thursday calls him “the most viably progressive candidate for Governor in Florida’s history”  and highlighted his plans to make healthcare more affordable through Medicare for All, increase spending on education and workforce training through a corporate tax adjustment, and raise the minimum wage in Florida to $15 an hour.

The following is the full list of Volusia County officials who announced their endorsements of Gillum on Thursday:

Volusia County Council Member At-Large and former State Representative Joyce M. Cusack

Mayor of Palatka Terrill Hill

Daytona Beach City Commissioner Dannette Henry

Daytona Beach City Commissioner Paula R. Reed
