Heres Johnny!

all work and no play makes jack a dull boy...

7/20/2007 - 5:49 pm

Has anyone gone to the Senate nurse/doctor? Yes. I went once for a slight cold I had. I wanted to see if they could give me anything. The nurse essentially told me I had the plague and that I had to go home at once. With all these old senators around, I suppose they have to err on the side of caution.

7/20/2007 - 5:37 pm

Anyone catch this firsthand? Chris Shays pulled a Cynthia McKinney: Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., who grabbed a Capitol Police officer's name tag in a profanity-laced tirade Thursday, apologized Friday for his conduct. The congressman's outburst was precipitated by the officer's refusal to admit a Shays staffer and several of his constituents into a staff entrance.

CQ: Senate moderates of both parties are taking another stab at turning themselves into a legislative force, this time with some outside help.

The alliance -- which organizers Mary L. Landrieu and Olympia J. Snower say attracts about a dozen members to its meetings, depending on the subject -- will work with an off-the-Hill think tank, the Bipartisan Policy Center, to suggest paths to compromise on contentious bills.

The think tank was founded March 6 with an advisory board that includes for former Senate majority leaders: Tom Daschle, D-S.D. (1987-2005); George Mitchell, D-Maine (1980-95); Howard H. Baker Jr., R-Tenn. (1967-85); and Bob Dole, R-Kan. (1969-96).

The center, with an $8 million budget and staff of 35, will provide research help on such issues as climate change, port security, Iran's nuclear capabilites, food safety, prison reform and farm policy.

7/20/2007 - 5:19 pm

this NPR bitch on hardball just got smoked

7/20/2007 - 5:16 pm

See, who says there isn't bipartisan agreement on Capitol Hill? Both sides are embarassed with their respective parties.

7/20/2007 - 5:08 pm

That's okay. I'm often embarrased to be a Democrat (see: carried interest).

7/20/2007 - 5:07 pm

J.C. Watts on CNN:  "I dont believe the earth is warming."  Sometimes I'm so embarrased to be a republican.

7/20/2007 - 4:56 pm

oh i surely do

7/20/2007 - 4:36 pm

oh i surely do

7/20/2007 - 4:36 pm

i do, i do.

7/20/2007 - 4:29 pm

who wants to play power hour

7/20/2007 - 4:27 pm

what a way to win votes.

7/20/2007 - 4:18 pm

Wow, wow, hold on a second. Clinton has breasts?

7/20/2007 - 4:17 pm

the moment that a congressmen's views (on average) dont reflect his
constituents views (on average) is the day that he no longer is
fulfilling his duty as a MoC
I
disagree. An MoC is suppose to vote for what is in his/her
constituent's best interests, not necessarily for what they want or
like. They're elected because their constituents trust their judgment.
That's at least how it should be. Not only is that the way it should be...that is the way it is supposed to be. Our founding fathers never intended for this to be a direct democracy. We are a Republic for a reason. The constituent gets to vote for the MOC and the MOC votes on the issues. Here is an easy question for everyone....what % of your MOC's constituents who call/write would you consider to be well informed on the issue they are contacting the office about?

7/20/2007 - 4:12 pm

it's pretty damn early to be lowering expectations. he knows they're screwed. and that's why they're making a big fuss about the Southwick nomination. this is likely the last chance they'll have -- since the next president will likely be a Democrat -- to get these judicial nominations through. they're desparate.

lowering expectiations possibly?

7/20/2007 - 3:56 pm

McConnell said today that it is unlikely Republicans can win back the Senate and talked about efforts GOP could take to make life difficult for a Democratic president. "If you look at the numbers, holding our own is...about all we could hope for. Our goal is to stay roughly where we are."

7/20/2007 - 3:53 pm

I like the ones who call and say..."I want to vote for (insert issue here)"

7/20/2007 - 3:46 pm

Are you surprised that so many constituents believe
we are a direct democracy rather than a republic? They call and call and call
bitching and moaning about the face that a MOC didn’t vote the way (in their
opinion) the majority of constituents wanted them to. I’ve tried to explain
this to a few and it never goes well. They actually believe that a MOC is
supposed to vote the will of the people and not express their own opinions."

couldn't disagree more.  the moment that a congressmen's views (on average) dont reflect his constituents views (on average) is the day that he no longer is fulfilling his duty as a MoC

tony is a little boy who lives in my mouth...

7/20/2007 - 3:09 pm

Honestly, I want to work with someone on their last day who
is really pissed off. I want to hear them take that last phone call and tell
the constituent to fuck off! That would be such a wonderful day.

loons and lobbyists. that's capitol hill for you.

7/20/2007 - 2:41 pm

"Was that ever substantiated? No. I'm pretty sure that was a joke."

Damn. At least it kept our interns watching themselves more closely for a few days.

7/20/2007 - 2:38 pm

She asked me why it is then that some MOC’s want to
investigate it…of course I wanted to tell her the truth...it’s only to keep
loons like her happy. Instead, I told her that we were wondering the same thing
consider the fact that it doesn’t exist….and that if it did…it would have to
come before my MOC’s committee and we haven’t heard a damn thing about it.
These people need to up the dosage…loons…

7/20/2007 - 2:37 pm

What are the Hawk and Dove's happy hour specials?

7/20/2007 - 2:37 pm

Was that ever substantiated? No. I'm pretty sure that was a joke.

7/20/2007 - 2:36 pm

Someone just called and was pissed off about the North
American Union (more specifically, she was angry that Bush & Congress want
to dissolve our borders with Canada
and Mexico
and create only one nation). I simply told her that it is not true and it is nothing
more than a conspiracy theory. She questioned that and I explained to her that
it isn’t true…it has never happened and it never well. She asked me why it is
then that some MOC’s want to investigate it…of course I wanted to tell her the

Has anyone gone to the Senate nurse/doctor? Are they helpful?

Was that ever substantiated?

7/20/2007 - 2:32 pm

The Member I work for voted against the original Iraq war authorization and has voted for withdrawal ever since. A few days ago he asked the office to try and figure out a way to get Iraq off the national agenda (no joke). He's sick of it, he's tired of debating it, and thought the all-nighter was pointless. You'd think now would be his time to shine.

7/20/2007 - 2:18 pm

51%? What are they smoking?

7/20/2007 - 2:07 pm

National Journal Insiders Poll (41 Congressional Democrats, 39 Congressional Republicans): When do you think Congress will enact legislation to force President Bush to withdraw troops from Iraq? Within 3 months: 37% Dem; 15% GOP; Within 6 months: 22% Dem; 18% GOP; Within 1 year: 10% Dem; 15% GOP; Never: 27% Dem; 51% GOP.

7/20/2007 - 2:03 pm

Senators Clinton and Kerry plan to introduce legislation that would require the Pentagon to prepare a report and briefing for Congress on contingency planning for redeploying troops from Iraq.

7/20/2007 - 1:59 pm

maybe the worst analogy about sex in favor of abstinence eduation..."Mr. Love grabbed a tape dispenser and snapped off two fresh pieces. He slapped them to his filing cabinet and the floor; they trapped dirt, lint, a small metal bolt. “Now when it comes time for them to get married, the marriage pulls apart so easily,” he said, trying to unite the grimy strips. “Why? Because they gave the stickiness away.”"

Bush to Have Colonoscopy at Camp David

By DEB RIECHMANN

The Associated Press

Friday, July 20, 2007; 1:07 PM

WASHINGTON -- President Bush will undergo a routine colonoscopy Saturday and temporarily hand presidential powers over to Vice President Dick Cheney, the White House said.

7/20/2007 - 1:25 pm

a libertarian = a retard

So… Ron Paul = a crazy retard

7/20/2007 - 1:24 pm

Why do these idiots (Ron Paul’s constituents) vote someone
into office that does absolutely nothing? Seriously, what is the point of being
a LEGISLATOR if you vote against almost any and all LEGISLATION?!?! The jackass
has had one Bill….ONE BILL which has been signed into law since 1975…and it was
a fluff piece!

7/20/2007 - 1:13 pm

"ron paul votes against ANYTHING that interferes with someone elses government.  he has...o what do u call those things...people used to have them....o what are they called...o yeah...principles"

hmmm well i guess we can welcome Paul's staffer's to the forum

7/20/2007 - 12:48 pm

What happened with Pelosi and her interns?

7/20/2007 - 12:47 pm

Bush: "No weapons of mass destruction up here."

7/20/2007 - 12:41 pm

It's because Bush is going in for a colonoscopy.  Doctors hope to locate his head.  Ba dum bum.

7/20/2007 - 12:38 pm

Pelosi is going to write a memoir. I bet she's going to address the controversy surrounding the intern-firing incident.

7/20/2007 - 12:31 pm

I'm shocked, shocked, that Cheney would do such a thing.

7/20/2007 - 12:30 pm

well, at least now it'll be official.

7/20/2007 - 12:28 pm

is that constitutional since he's not part of the executive branch?

7/20/2007 - 12:27 pm

BREAKING: VP Cheney to Temporarily Serve as President

From C-Span capitol news. How is this possible?

7/20/2007 - 12:25 pm

ron paul: concensus candidate of '08

7/20/2007 - 12:12 pm

Everyone has there price. My guess is a lifetime supply of Jimmy Dean sausage would be Ron Paul's.

7/20/2007 - 12:10 pm

ron paul votes against ANYTHING that interferes with someone elses government.  he has...o what do u call those things...people used to have them....o what are they called...o yeah...principles.

7/20/2007 - 12:08 pm

Because he's opposed to pretty much all U.S. involvement in international affairs. An real isolationist, through and through

7/20/2007 - 11:55 am

Because Ron Paul hates Sheila Jackson Lee for being a black, Democratic Texan?

7/20/2007 - 11:52 am

He's upset that the Irish stole his pot 'o gold.

7/20/2007 - 11:51 am

H.R. 482. Support for Northern Ireland's New Government. Jackson-Lee, D-Texas, motion to suspend the rules and adopt the resolution that would express the sense of the HoR that the U.S. stands strongly in support of the new power-sharing government in Northern Ireland. Motion agreed to 413-1. The lone vote against: Ron Paul. Anyone know why?

7/20/2007 - 11:46 am

It's better for everyone when John Kerry uses as few words as possible.

7/20/2007 - 11:37 am

Technically, Senate rules would dictate that Kerry only refer to DeMint as "the gentleman from South Carolina..."

7/20/2007 - 11:30 am

Kerry really seems to be trying to make the most of the whole Vitter affair, so to speak.

"So when Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) responded to DeMint's Tuesday objection to consideration of his amll-business bill, did Kerry simply suffer from some momentary confustion that caused him to address DeMint as Vitter? "I appreciate Senator Vitter -- Senator DeMint, his need to object..." Kerry began.

Technically, Senate rules would dictate that Kerry only refer to DeMint as "the gentleman from South Carolina.""

7/20/2007 - 11:28 am

you would thihnk that Kerry wouldnt try to tell jokes anymore

7/20/2007 - 11:28 am

Hillary? Sexy? Never.

7/20/2007 - 11:13 am

I think hillary was trying to bring sexy back. Was she successful?

7/20/2007 - 11:02 am

"During one long-ago filibuster, Sen. Estes Kefauver, D-Tenn., wore a tube-and-bag rig to obviate trips to the bathroon, according to former Senate Parliamentarian Floyd Riddick. But the bag failed after six hours, and Kefauver was forced to sheepishly ask for unanimous conset to adjust things in private."

7/20/2007 - 10:30 am

John Kerry, on Nantucket at the DSCC fundraiser last weekend, recited this limerick: "There once was a man named Vitter/Who vowed that he wasn't a quitter/But with stories of women/And all of his sinnin'/He knows his career's in the  -- oh, nevermind."

7/20/2007 - 10:28 am

More thefts. Someone stole three waters jugs from our office. This will not stand!

7/20/2007 - 10:24 am

only two characters die. According to a Zogby poll, only 20% of readers think Harry Potter will be one of two characters killed.

7/20/2007 - 10:19 am

just my guess

7/20/2007 - 10:13 am

Everyone dies except Harry and the girl

7/20/2007 - 10:12 am

Who's getting Harry Potter tonight at midnight?  I haven't read any of them. Should I start with the last one?

7/20/2007 - 9:18 am

Who's up for a creative amendment contest? Awesome. Or you could name an amendment or resolution and people would have to guess whether it's real or not. Some of them are just absolutely nuts.

7/20/2007 - 9:17 am
