Democrat Andrew Gillum focuses on “Opportunity” in new campaign video

Democrat Andrew Gillum’s campaign for governor on Monday released a new digital video (see below)  called “Opportunity” that focuses on the candidate’s own life story.

“Were it not for a good public education. Caring and loving parents. A grandmother who prayed for me. And quite frankly, people who believed in me enough to say that I could, I wouldn’t be the person who I am today,” Gillum says in the video.

The 38-year-old Tallahassee mayor was raised in a low-income area of Miami. His mother drove a school bus and his father was a construction worker. Gillum was the first member of his family to graduate college.

“And I plan to work as hard as I can, everyday if given the opportunity, to make sure every child has that same opportunity,” Gillum goes on to say in the spot.

The :30 video, which is being called a five-figure statewide digital buy, features Gillum sitting on steps in front of a modest house that appears to be located in a low-income neighborhood.

“Andrew is the only candidate in this race who truly understands what everyday Floridians need: a strong public education, a good-paying job, and a state that values its everyday people over its well-heeled and well-connected,” says Geoff Burgan, Gillum’s campaign communication director. “‘Opportunity’ showcases Andrew’s compelling personal story and highlights the areas that a Governor Gillum will pursue.”

With limited resources, Gillum’s campaign says it has used digital video in “unprecedented” ways. It points to a video on Twitter featuring a voter registration drive in Broward County aimed at registering high school students that has received more than a million organic impressions and a rally broadcast live in Orlando with state Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith.

Gillum consistently comes in third place in most of the polls taken that have been conducted regarding the Democratic primary race for governor, although he did come in second in one of the surveys. The Capitolist’s Horserace Index, which uses a weighted formula for averaging the polls taken thus far, has Gillum in third. The Index shows former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine out front with 19.3 percent, followed by Gwen Graham with 16.1 percent. Gillum is in third place with 9.5 percent and in fourth place is Orlando-area businessman Chris King.
