Good News for Republicans in the Special Election to Replace Frank Artiles?

by | Jul 6, 2017

It may be an easy win for a Republican in the fight for Florida Senate District 40 seat.

A poll done by SEA Polling indicates Democratic candidate Annette Taddeo has a 13 percentage-point advantage against former state Representative Ana Rivas-Logan for the July 25 Democratic primary race for the Senate District 40 seat.

From the poll, for Democrats most likely to vote in the special election primary, 34 percent favored Taddeo and 21 percent said they’d vote for Rivas-Logan.

The great news for the Republican candidates is that 42 percent of those surveyed from the same poll don’t even know who Taddeo is, and 54 percent have no idea who Rivas-Logan is, which is surprising, considering Rivas-Logan is a former Florida House Representative.

The special election is the result of former Senator Frank Artiles resigning the seat this past April after apologizing on the Senate floor for using racial slurs and offending two other Florida senators.

In the past, Taddeo has four lost elections on her record, and zero wins. She has run for Congress, the Miami-Dade County Commission, as the lieutenant governor along side Charlie Crist and most recently as a Democratic in the congressional primary.

Rivas-Logan first served on the Miami-Dade School Board and she was elected to the state House as a Republican, which may explain why some of the Kendall area Democrats don’t know of her.

As of now, Taddeo has out-raised Rivas-Logan at nearly $46,000, versus Rivas Logan’s $10,425.

Former Senator Alex Diaz de la Portilla, Representative Jose Felix Diaz and Lorenzo Palomares (an attorney) are fighting it out for the Republican vote.

The general election set for September 26 where the winners for the Democrats and Republicans will face off with NP A Christian “He-Man” Schlaerth.
