Latest poll in governor’s race shows Gillum still leading DeSantis, Scott-Nelson race a toss-up

Another poll shows Democratic candidate for governor, Andrew Gillum, maintaining a lead over his Republican opponent, Ron DeSantis. In the race for U.S. Senate, the poll indicates it’s essentially a dead heat between Gov. Rick Scott and incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson with Scott holding a slim edge.

The poll was conducted by Thompson Reuters, Ipsos and the University of Virginia Center for Politics.

In the race for governor, the poll shows Gillum with a 6-point lead over DeSantis. 50 percent to 44 percent. The remainder of the voters surveyed either favored a different candidate or none of those on the ballot.

In the U.S. Senate contest, Scott holds a 1-point lead, 46 percent to 45 percent. That’s well within the poll’s margin of error.

The Reuters/Ipsos/UVA Center for Politics poll surveyed 1,000 voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Recent polls have shown Gillum has been leading in the governor’s contest since it started at the first of the month, but this marks one of his biggest leads of any of the polls. Real Clear Politics, which provides an average of the polls, shows Gillum up by nearly 4 percent over DeSantis.

The question is, at this point of the contest, how much do voters really know about either Gillum  or DeSantis? Neither of the two candidates were supposed to win their parties’ nominations. The two candidates are from opposite ends of the political spectrum — Gillum, an unabashed progressive, and DeSantis, a staunch Republican.

DeSantis stepped down from his seat in Congress earlier this month to devote his full attention to winning the race for gpvernor. He has had the full backing of President Donald Trump, although media reports suggest a rift has developed between Trump and DeSantis because of DeSantis’ acceptance of a study that found nearly 3,000 people died during Hurricane Maria last year. Trump claims that number was inflated by his political opponents who want to embarrass him.

Gillum, the mayor of Tallahassee has been endorsed by progressive U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders from Vermonth.
