New poll indicates possible signs of trouble for President Trump among Florida voters next year

A slim majority of voters in Florida say they definitely will not vote for President Donald Trump if he is the Republican candidate in the 2020 presidential election. That’s the finding of the latest Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday morning. The poll shows 51 percent of Florida registered voters surveyed say they will not vote for Trump, while 31 percent said they will definitely for the president.  Another 14 percent said they would consider voting for him.

The results pretty much run down party lines. Of those who say they are definitely voting for President Trump,75 percent are Republicans, 2 percent  are Democrats and 21 percent are independent voters.

Fifty-three percent of voters surveyed disapprove of the president’s job performance, while 41 percent approve. That’s due largely to a large block of women voters who disapprove of Trump’s job performance. Women give Trump a negative 35 – 59 percent approval rating. Men are tied 47 – 47 percent.

Florida voters give Trump a negative 40 – 52 percent favorability rating.

Among potential Democratic candidates for president, former Vice President Joe Biden gets a positive 49 – 35 percent favorability rating, including 78 – 8 percent among Democrats and 46 – 28 percent among voters 18 to 34 years old.

“As he ponders a final decision on running for president, former Vice President Joseph Biden is getting some good news from the nation’s most important voters,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. “Biden scores best by a mile when Florida voters are asked to rate their feelings about various Democratic presidential candidates.

“Florida voters have been the key to winning the Electoral College in several presidential elections,” Brown added. “Biden has a healthy 49 – 35 percent favorability rating, the only potential candidate with more voters viewing him favorable than not. Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are about as well-known as Biden, but they are both viewed negatively overall.”

Sen. Sanders has a negative approval rating of 37 – 49 percent. Sen. Warren has a negative favorability rating of 26 -44  percent. While two other Democratic hopefuls who also serve in the U.S. Senate also have negative approval ratings based on the Quinnipiac poll. Sen. Kamala Harris received a negative 23 – 30 favorability rating and Sen. Cory Booker received a negative 20 – 30 rating.

Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,058 Florida voters from March 6 – 11.The poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.7 percentage points, including the design effect.
