If you’re not registered to vote in Florida, time is running out. You have until July 30 to register in order to be able to vote in the state’s August 28 primary contest. That reminder comes from the state’s top election official, Secretary of State Ken Detzner.
“Voters only have a few days left to register to vote or update their party affiliation to be in effect for the Primary Election. I encourage all eligible voters to check their voter registration status and make sure that their information is up-to-date,” said Detzner. “In order to ensure we are providing any needed assistance to Florida voters, the Department is extending the hours of operation of the Voter Assistance Hotline leading up to the registration deadline.”
The most recent voter registration numbers running through the end of June of this year, as compiled by the Secretary of State’s office, shows the number of registered voters grew from June a year ago for most categories — except Democrats.
While Democrats still have the largest number of registered voters in Florida — 230,066 more registered voters than Republicans — their numbers have dropped. The number of Democrats registered in Florida in June was 4,792,955. That’s a decrease of 15,351 from a year ago.
Meanwhile, the number of registered Republicans, stands at 4,562,533, an increase of 17,825 registered voters over the past year for the GOP.
The largest gain came in the area of those voters who claim No Party Affiliation. In June, 3,489,449 voters registered as NPA. That’s an increase of 40,444.
Minor parties had 82,737 registered voters at the end of June, an increase of 17,211 voters from a year ago.
Overall, Florida has 12,927,318 registered voters as of June 30. That’s an increase of 60,129 voters from the year before.
