Augmenting The Capitolist’s Tallahassee-based reporting team and helping to align the site’s content strategy for 2021 and beyond, Karen Murphy joins the staff as Capital Reporter. She will cover Florida’s state government and report on issues at the nexus of business, policy and politics. She will focus on how legislation and executive actions affect key business sectors, including healthcare, energy, telecommunications, tourism, agriculture, finance, and more.
Murphy is an award-winning reporter who covered the North Florida and South Georgia Area. As a freelance journalist, Murphy covered business news for 850 Business Magazine, feature stories for Tallahassee Magazine, general assignments for Tallahassee Reports and others. Murphy was formerly with the Thomasville Times-Enterprise in Thomasville, Georgia, where she provided comprehensive news, investigative, feature and business reporting of Grady and Thomas County. She won a Georgia Press Association Award for feature writing and was part of the news team that earned awards for overall excellence and excellent local coverage from the Georgia Press Association.
Murphy has over 15 years experience in public relations and advertising, representing a host of businesses, including the Florida Credit Union League, where she was Director of Marketing. She also has represented several different government agencies, a local hospital, phone company, and more. She has won over 30 various awards for public relations and advertising excellence. Murphy lives in Tallahassee, is married, with two adult children.
