Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford is backing Republican Griff Griffitts in the race for House District 6.

Ford, who was elected sheriff in 2016, has served in the Bay County Sheriff’s Office since 2009. Prior to his stint, he served within the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) for 18 years. In a Tuesday statement, Ford touted Griffitts’ leadership and close ties to the district he seeks to represent.

“I have stood with Griff Griffitts during and after a category 5 hurricane, a pandemic, and most recently, major fires,” said Ford. “Griff has always made sure that law enforcement has the tools we need to keep our communities safe and has made sure our first responders are never looked over during budget discussions. He is a man of his word, a trusted, proven leader, and in my opinion, Griff is ready to continue working for Bay County on day one. This is why I endorse Griff Griffitts to be our next State Representative.”

Griffitts, a Bay County commissioner who represents District 5, has deep roots in HD 6. He graduated from Bay High School in 1989 before earning his political science degree in 1993 from Florida State University. He is co-owner of a home construction business with his brother and has served six years on the Panama City Beach Civil Service Board, and nine years on the Bay County Planning Commission. He has also served on the Bay County Tourist Development Council and the Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce.

The Panama City businessman boasts major endorsements from both Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis and Rep. Jay Trumbull, the latter of which currently represents HD 6. Griffitts has also been backed by the Fraternal Order of Police, Republican Party of Florida Chair Joe Gruters, U.S. Representative Neal Dunn, and Panama City Mayor Greg Brudnicki.

“I am proud to have the endorsement of Sheriff Ford,” said Griffitts. “Keeping our communities safe has always been one of my top priorities. As your next State Representative, I will continue to stand with Governor DeSantis to stop Joe Biden from shipping illegal immigrants to Florida, and to keep our local streets free from the lawlessness that we have seen in liberal led cities across the country. Let’s keep Florida safe, together!”

HD 6, a right-leaning district that encompasses coastal Bay County, including Panama City, Panama City Beach, Lynn Haven and Mexico Beach.

Griffitts is facing Brian Clowdus in the Republican primary for HD 6.
