Florida-based U.S. Representative Byron Donalds on Thursday endorsed former President Donald Trump over Gov. Ron DeSantis in the 2024 race for the White House.
Donalds, who is rumored to be a top contender for the position of Florida’s governor in 2026, has become the third representative from Florida to endorse Trump, following the lead of Matt Gaetz and Anna Paulina Luna who did so earlier this year.
“There is only one leader at this time in our nation’s history who can seize this moment and deliver what we need – to get us back on track, provide strength and resolve, and Make America Great Again,” said Donalds. “That is why I am honored to endorse President Donald J. Trump for President in 2024, and I ask my fellow Americans to join me today.”
Though DeSantis has yet to officially announce his candidacy, the political quarrel between himself and the former president has intensified in recent months following a spree of verbal attacks. Amid a series of indictments, Trump’s momentum has grown of late, with new polls reflecting his largest lead to date for this election cycle.
In a poll reported by Reuters this week, 48 percent of self-described Republicans said they want Trump to be the party’s nominee, an increase from 44 percent in a poll conducted earlier this month.
A historic ally of both Trump and DeSantis, Donalds notably voted to overturn the election of President Joe Biden in 2020, stating that election laws were violated in several states.
“Look around right now. Our economy is a mess. Inflation is making life unaffordable for our families,” continued Donalds. “Our borders have become completely insecure. Our justice system has become an injustice system. Foreign leaders test our mettle, and are pushing us toward the brink of World War III. Far too many Americans have simply given up hope, and even lost their faith.”
Donalds notably garnered a contingent of support to unseat Rep. Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker in January, accruing 20 votes and acting as a stalwart through the position’s election process.
