David Jolly Gets Obama Backing in Florida Governor’s Race

David Jolly Gets Obama Backing in Florida Governor’s Race

Former President Barack Obama endorsed Democrat David Jolly in Florida’s gubernatorial race, releasing a video Saturday supporting the former Republican congressman’s bid against Republican U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds ahead of the November 3 general election.

In the video, Obama highlighted Jolly’s political independence, positions on housing and health care affordability, and commitment to education while encouraging Florida voters to support his candidacy.

“Florida holds a special place in my heart. We won twice because you believed in a better future,” Obama said, referencing his presidential victories in Florida in 2008 and 2012. “Now I’m supporting David Jolly for governor because he believes in it too.”

Obama also praised Jolly’s record of challenging corruption and said he believes the Democratic nominee would confront powerful special interests.

“Elections are about who will fight for you, and in this election, it’s David Jolly,” Obama said.

The endorsement adds Obama to a list of Democratic figures supporting Jolly, including former President Bill Clinton, former Attorney General Eric Holder, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, civil rights attorney Ben Crump and the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Obama concluded the video by urging Floridians to support Jolly in the upcoming election.

“Vote for the change you deserve. Vote David Jolly for governor,” he said.
