Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum is calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. His call comes in advance of the President’s scheduled stop in Pensacola later today.
Gillum made his call for impeachment in a video posted on his Facebook page.
“Donald Trump should be impeached now,” said Gillum. The Tallahassee mayor accuses Trump of “obstruction of justice” in the firing of former FBI Director James Comey.
“The President said he knew that his National Security Advisor (Michael Flynn) lied to the FBI, so he ordered the FBI director to drop the investigation and then he fired him after he refused to do so,” Gillum said in the video. “This is an alarming and clear-cut case of obstruction of justice.”
Trump originally claimed Flynn was fired in February because he had lied to Vice President Mike Pence about his Russia contacts.
Comey told the Senate Justice Committee in June that during a meeting with Trump in February, the President told him that he hoped Comey was capable of “letting go” of the case against Flynn.
Flynn pleaded guilty on December 1 of lying to the FBI about the Russia contacts during an interview given in January.
The day after Flynn entered the plea, Trump tweeted that he “had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI.” The tweet raised questions as to when the President knew about Flynn lying to the FBI and whether he tried to influence the FBI’s investigation.
Trump’s attorney has since said it was him who wrote the tweet and not Trump.
Gillum says Trump’s tweet is an admission that he already knew Flynn had lied to the FBI and proves he attempted to obstruct justice when he asked Comey if he was capable of “letting go” of the case against Flynn.
“The Donald Trump presidency shouldn’t even make it to 2018,” Gillum said. He is the first Democrat running for governor to call for Trump’s impeachment.
