If there’s one thing you can say about the Democrats game plan in the U.S. Senate race between Rick Scott and Bill Nelson, it’s that they are being persistent. Sort of like a dog chasing after a car and biting at the tires.
They’ve produced video spots, put out news releases and held conference calls attacking Scott and his record as governor. What’s the latest gimmick by the Florida Democratic Party in their arsenal of political tools?
A playlist of songs created on Spotify, the digital music service, filled with suggested tunes that the Scott campaign can play at its rallies. As you can imagine, the list of songs isn’t very flattering. The playlist is called, “Smooth Criminal for Senate ‘18.”
It’s all part of the Democrats Self Serving Scott campaign intended to portray the two-term governor and successful businessman as someone whose actions have been motivated by his self serving interests.
“The playlist highlights some of the greatest hits from Rick Scott’s time as CEO, candidate and governor,” the state Democratic party said in a news release sent out Friday morning.
The playlist includes “Plead the Fifth” by Kip Moore, a reference to Scott pleading the fifth 75 times during depositions into his involvement in Columbia/HCA’s $1.7 billion Medicare fraud case. Scott was the head of the company at the time.
It also includes “Who Let the Dogs Out?” by Baha men. An apparent dig to 2010 when the Scott family adopted a dog during Scott’s first campaign for governor. The dog went away after the election. Some accuse Scott of using the dog, named “Reagan,” for a campaign prop. The governor said the dog had behavioral issues and they chose to return him to the previous owner.
Also on the playlist are: “Smooth Criminal” by Michael Jackson, “Robots” by Flight of the Conchords, “Me, Myself and I” by Beyonce and “Mo Money Mo Problems” by Notorious B.I.G., Mase, and Diddy.
“Just five days into his U.S. Senate campaign, Florida voters have learned more about Rick Scott’s self-serving politics that have grown his wealth at the expense of Floridians, reminding them that Mo’ Money surely does mean Mo’ Problems,” said Florida Democratic Party spokesman Sebastian Kitchen. “Rick Scott may be a smooth criminal, but he can’t run from his record of cutting public education and Medicaid, while looking out himself.”
