Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday appointed state Sen. Jay Collins as Florida’s lieutenant governor, filling a post that had been vacant since February when Jeanette Núñez resigned to become president of Florida International University.

A Republican from Hillsborough County, Collins has represented Senate District 14 since 2022. He served 23 years in the U.S. Army, much of it as a Green Beret medic, and completed multiple combat tours in Afghanistan, Iraq and South America.

In Tallahassee, Collins sponsored legislation to loosen restrictions on working hours for teenagers and was an early supporter of Hope Florida, the First Lady’s initiative to connect residents with social services. He has also played a role in state-led rescue efforts overseas, including arranging flights for Americans caught in the 2024 Israel–Hamas conflict.

DeSantis made the announcement during a press conference at the Tampa Green Beret Association, where Collins was sworn in moments later with his wife and two young sons by his side.

“Jay Collins, a patriot who has dedicated his life to serving our country and delivering on conservative priorities, will be a great Lieutenant Governor,” Gov. DeSantis said. “Together, we will keep Florida strong and keep delivering results for the people of our state.”

Collins said he intended to use the lieutenant governor’s office to advance policy across a range of subject areas.

“I am deeply honored to be Florida’s Lieutenant Governor,” he said. “Serving the people of our great state has always been a privilege, and I am committed to upholding the values and principles that make Florida exceptional. I look forward to working with Governor Ron DeSantis and our dedicated team to continue advancing policies that promote freedom, prosperity, and opportunity for all Floridians.”

Collins’ appointment triggers a special election in Senate District 14, a seat where Republicans hold a 5% voter registration advantage over Democrats. However, recent special election results suggest GOP candidates are underperforming Donald Trump’s 2024 numbers in the district.
