DeSantis suits up for Herschel Walker ahead of Georgia’s Senate runoff

  • With time expiring, DeSantis threw a Hail Mary pass to Herschel Walker in hopes of helping the former Heisman Trophy winner for the University of Georgia score a victory in Tuesday’s pivotal Senate runoff election
  • The endorsement from Florida’s Governor came hours before polls opened in Georgia
  • Walker faces Democratic Sen. incumbent Raphael Warnock

Governor Ron DeSantis is endorsing Republican football legend Herschel Walker ahead of Tuesday’s Georgia Senate runoff.

The Florida Governor gave the Georgia Bulldog football legend a treat, gifting Walker a last minute endorsement as he looks to stiff-arm Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock in the final showdown of the 2022 midterm elections.

Walker’s campaign announced DeSantis’ seal of approval on their official Twitter page.

“I’m proud to endorse Herschel Walker for U.S. Senate. We can’t let Biden Democrats, like Raphael Warnock, hold this U.S. Senate seat. We need conservative leaders to help restore America,” DeSantis said. “Tuesday, December 6, vote Herschel Walker for U.S. Senate.”

The stage is set for the final Senate battle of the midterms as Peach State voters head back to the polls today to settle the Senate seat that will impact the political makeup of the upper chamber of Congress.

During the Nov. 8 general election, Warnock was the leading vote-getter, receiving 49.4 percent of the vote to Walker’s 48.5 — both falling short of the 50% threshold needed to win the race outright.

Georgia, of course, is no stranger to runoff elections.

Warnock, the state’s first Black senator and the senior minister of the Atlanta church where Martin Luther King Jr. preached, defeated GOP Sen. Kelly Loeffler in a runoff election last year, which helped deliver Senate control to Democrats.

With a Walker win on Tuesday, the parties will again split the Senate 50-50, giving Vice President Kamala Harris the tie-breaking vote.

Current polling suggests that Warnock holds slight lead — by 1.9 percentage points — over Walker.

Despite former President Donald Trump being an Achilles’ heel for many Republican candidates during this year’s midterm elections, Walker was able to coast to the Republican nomination in Georgia in large part because of the support of the political kingmaker.

While many inside GOP circles now question Trump’s Midas touch, Walker is banking that its magic, along with additional endorsements from Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and DeSantis, is enough to carry him into the end zone on Tuesday.

“The Lord prepared me for a moment like this, and Georgia, I’m ready to get out there and fight for YOU. It’s time we return this seat to the PEOPLE,” Walker said in a social media post following the endorsement.

The Capitolist reached out to DeSantis’ campaign team for comment, but did not receive a response on today’s endorsement.

So sad … I had hopes that DeSantis was smarter than than endorsing someone like Walker.
