Governor Ron DeSantis appeared on “Hannity” Tuesday night to discuss the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and how Florida’s practical approach proved to be the best solution to overcome the outbreak.
Speaking to Sean Hannity, DeSantis said his measured approach — compared to other states like New York and California who implemented broader shutdowns — proved vital in navigating the state through the worldwide contagion, and towards the light at the end of the tunnel.
“We knew where the threat was, and we knew where the vulnerabilities were,” DeSantis said, pointing to his decision to deploy the National Guard and other teams to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus by conducting spot testing and deploying millions of masks and gloves.

DeSantis went on to say that knowing who was and wasn’t vulnerable to the disease led to the state having better results and a much lower death rate.
“We know who the vulnerable populations are. We know, if you look at the statistics for people under 50 who don’t have chronic conditions, I mean, you have an extremely low chance of death from this virus and those situations,” DeSantis said. “We know how to protect folks and social distance between those two groups and so, I think there’s a lot of things we’ve learned over the last six weeks. So, I think we can take a step forward here in May, continue to build on that, and get America back.”
DeSantis also applauded the efforts made by state Secretary of Health Mary Mayhew for preventing the spread of COVID-19 in nursing homes.
“If the virus gets in those facilities, it can run rampant,” DeSantis told Hannity. “I got a great Secretary for Health Care Administration.”
DeSantis’ interview comes hours after he met with President Donald Trump at the White House to discuss efforts to reopen Florida’s economy. That meeting took place at the White House with the governor revealing that he would roll out a methodical, data-driven plan to ease restrictions in the Sunshine State.
DeSantis also told reporters that he will announce the next steps on reopening the state Wednesday.
Florida’s stay-at-home order is set to expire at the end of the week.
