Displaying his loyalty to President Donald Trump, DeSantis has been busy working the phone, calling high-profile donors ahead of two fundraisers scheduled for Trump’s reelection campaign. Despite being embroiled in an ongoing coronavirus debate with many on the political left, Florida’s governor continues to bolster Trump’s campaign — returning the favor from 2018 — while putting his own fundraising efforts on hold.
COVID-19
Florida broke its single-day record for COVID-19 deaths on Thursday, adding another 253 residents to the toll. The Florida Department of Health also announced 9,956 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases in the state to 461,379 since the pandemic began.
Campaign Season
With less than 20 days to the Primary Elections, Florida officials and candidates are raking in backers left and right. Associations like Florida Chamber and Associated Industries of Florida (AIF) are rolling out their first wave of endorsements. Expect more organizations and groups to start endorsing as we inch closer to the August 18.
Hurricane Season
Stretched thin by the ongoing pandemic, emergency responders are preparing for heavy rainfall, flash floods, and more as Tropical Storm Isaias heads along its forecasted path toward the East Coast. With sustained winds of up to 60 mph, the storm’s track and intensity forecast remain uncertain. With 2020 not being so kind to Florida, we pray that Isaias doesn’t make landfall.
School Season
As school officials across Florida continue grappling with reopening classrooms amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a major group of pediatricians this week released recommendations aimed at reducing risks to children and teachers. In an 11-page white paper sent to DeSantis, The Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics pointed to “significant benefits” of children going back to school but also said those benefits have to be weighed against the risks.
