Florida A&M University’s athletics director and vice president, Angela Adams Suggs, was arrested on charges stemming from her previous role as head of the Florida Sports Foundation following an investigation into the misuse of public funds, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) announced Monday.
Suggs, 55, is charged with one count each of grand theft and scheme to defraud, both felonies, along with four misdemeanor counts of filing false travel claims. She surrendered to authorities in Leon County and was released on $13,500 bond. Prosecutors in the Second Judicial Circuit are handling the case.
In a press release announcing the arrest, FDLE said that it opened the investigation late last year after receiving a referral from the Department of Commerce’s inspector general, who flagged questionable transactions uncovered in an audit of Suggs’ state-issued credit card. The foundation, which promotes sports tourism in Florida, operates under the Department of Commerce.
According to investigators, Suggs used the foundation card to make cash withdrawals, wire transfers, and personal purchases at casinos during official travel.
The total exceeded $24,000. Authorities allege that she submitted travel vouchers falsely listing the charges as meal expenses and did not fully repay the foundation. When questioned, she claimed some transactions were business-related and others were accidental.
FDLE said that the investigation is still ongoing.
