The first poll in the race for governor to be conducted by the Florida Chamber of Commerce, shows what other polls have shown — Democrat Andrew Gillum holds a slight lead over his Republican opponent, Ron DeSantis.

The Florida Chamber’s poll shows Gillum holding a 4-point lead, which is within the polls margin of error. Gillum received 47 percent compared to 43 percent for DeSantis. Two percent of those surveyed prefer another candidate, while 8 percent are undecided.

The poll surveyed 514 likely voters and was conducted September 6-9 —immediately after the nominees chose their running mates — and has a margin of error of +/-4.4 percent.

Gillum leads in all major media markets with the exception of Jacksonville, which is DeSantis’ home area of the state.

“Politically speaking, this is an interesting poll because most voters have learned a little about Ron DeSantis, yet most voters don’t know Andrew Gillum because he is a surprise winner and the most liberal of the Democrats on the ballot that ran in the primary election,” said Marian Johnson, Senior Vice President of Political Strategy, Florida Chamber of Commerce.

““It’s going to be interesting to see if Gillum, who is backing policies by Bill Nelson, yet supported by Bernie Sanders, Tom Steyer and George Soros will hold onto this lead while voters begin to understand his background and policies, or if Ron DeSantis and his policies will continue gaining popularity and propel him to succeed Governor Scott as Florida’s next Governor,” Johnson added. “The election is more than 50 days away and that’s a lifetime in Florida politics.”

A poll released by Quinnipiac University a little over a week ago also showed Gillum holding a narrow lead over DeSantis, 50 percent to 47 percent, which was also within that poll’s margin of error.
