Florida gas prices rose 22 cents over the past week, with the statewide average reaching $3.937 per gallon on Sunday as a broader spike in global oil prices continued to push fuel costs higher.

AAA’s current price tracker showed Florida drivers were paying about 21 cents more than a week earlier and just over $1 more than a month ago.

The increase comes as fuel markets react to the conflict involving Iran, which has disrupted global supply expectations and driven a sharp rise in crude oil prices. Reuters reported on March 19 that U.S. pump prices had climbed more than 30% since the war began in late February, with West Texas Intermediate crude rising 43% to $96.14 a barrel.

Florida’s average is now roughly in line with the national average of $3.942 per gallon, according to AAA’s latest figures. The current price level marks one of the highest periods for motorists since the 2022 fuel spike, when Florida’s regular unleaded average peaked at $4.690 per gallon in June 2022.

“Global events can hit drivers’ wallets quickly, and that is exactly what we are seeing right now,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA. “When oil prices spike this fast, refineries pay more for fuel, and those costs reach consumers almost immediately. Unfortunately, Florida drivers should expect continued volatility as long as global supply concerns remain unresolved.”

Regional prices within Florida continued to vary. AAA data showed West Palm Beach-Boca Raton among the state’s most expensive metro markets, while Crestview-Fort Walton Beach and Panama City remained among the least expensive.

Analysts have warned that gasoline prices could remain volatile as long as tensions in global oil markets persist.
