Florida Institute of Technology cracks top 20 in national graduate employability ranking

  • Florida Tech was one of just two Florida institutions to feature in the ranking, with the University of Florida placing 34th nationally and 167th globally

The Florida Institute of Technology ascended into the top 20 of the 2023 Global Employability University Ranking and Survey published on Tuesday, earning the highest marks of any Florida school. Ranked 17th nationally, the university is sandwiched between academically prestigious institutions like Dartmouth, Cornell, Georgia Tech, and UCLA.

Florida Tech was one of just two Florida institutions to feature in the ranking, with the University of Florida placing 34th nationally and 167th globally. The university’s overall ranking represents an advancement of 85 spots since the 2021 report, making it the biggest mover in the 2022-23 edition. Globally, Florida Tech ranked 76th.

“We are proud of this ranking, which reflects Florida Tech’s focus on empowering learners to excel in their careers,” said Marco Carvalho, the university’s executive vice president, provost, and COO. “This approach, now anchored by our STEM philosophy and enhanced by Florida Tech’s hands-on pedagogy, means our students are flying planes, building rocket engines, fighting simulated cyberattacks, and doing so much more – starting year one.”

Florida Tech benefits from its location in Melbourne, close to the headquarters of various aerospace technology firms and tech giant campuses.

Florida Tech additionally runs a variety of science-focused research centers and institutes, including the Wind and Hurricane Impact Research Laboratory and the Institute for Marine Research.

“Our graduates have professional-level skills with real-world technologies because they’ve been using them all throughout their Florida Tech experience,” explained Carvalho. “We know that matters to employers because companies that hire our graduates, like Apple, Boeing, NASA, Deloitte, L3Harris, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and SpaceX, tell us it matters,” he said.

PayScale, an academic watchdog, places Florida Tech in the top 6 percent for return on investment among U.S. colleges. With 95% becoming employed or attending graduate school after graduation, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Recent reports also suggest that the university is seeking to expand by the way of a medical school partnership, establishing an academic pathway to become a doctor through Florida Tech.

Florida Tech presently offers science and engineering degrees that are considered premed programs but does not offer a traditional medical school experience yet, according to Florida Today.
