The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday overturned Roe v. Wade, officially eliminating the constitutional right to abortion and leaving the question of its legality to the states.
The court ruled 6-3 to uphold a Mississippi abortion ban being challenged in the case and 5-4 to overturn Roe. The court’s opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization comes on the heels of a draft opinion leaking last month which indicated which way the justices would rule.
“We end this opinion where we began. Abortion presents a profound moral question. The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion. Roe and Casey arrogated that authority. We now overrule those decisions and return that authority to the people and their elected representatives,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the court’s opinion.
The monumental decision has led many to gather outside the U.S. Supreme Court building, both in support and in protest of the high court’s ruling that ended the half-century precedent. The ruling has also reached the Sunshine State, with many Florida politicians weighing in on the vote.

With Florida Republicans cruelly proving their appetite for robbing women and girls victimized by the horrific trauma of rape, incest, and human trafficking of their right to an abortion after 15 weeks – period, end of sentence, no exceptions – it is clearly only a matter of time before our state also debates an all-out abortion ban.

“I particularly like that the Court mentions, in outlining views of pro-life Americans, ‘a woman who puts her newborn up for adoption today has little reason to fear that the baby will not find a suitable home.’ That is certainly the case here in Florida. State Sen. Kelli Stargel:
“Protecting the innocent children whose lives are ended through abortion was a defining issue for me as I made the decision to run for elected office. Today is a wonderful affirmation of the pro-life efforts of so many over the last 50 years, and I am incredibly grateful to the justices for their courage in speaking the truth in the face of tremendous adversity.
“The so-called ‘right’ to murder an unborn child was entirely invented by the Roe decision and affirmed in the Casey decision, both of which were wrong from the start. Not only is abortion never mentioned in our Constitution, the opinion explains in great detail that history does not in any way support the pro-abortion lie that the ‘right’ to kill an unborn child is a liberty rooted in the history of this country or the common law. To the contrary, historical facts and writings cited by the court as well as modern scientific realities unequivocally support the fact that abortion is the taking of an innocent human life and a barbaric practice that has been repudiated throughout history.
“The damage Roe has caused this country is profound. Unfortunately, laws and legal opinions cannot change hearts and minds influenced by decades of an anti-life culture. State Rep. Anna Eskamani:
“This is a devastating blow to our collective freedom as women and Americans. And it follows a clear and consistent Republican effort to end the right to abortions. We have never lost a constitutional right, and now must make sure that Republicans at every level of government feel the consequences of stripping away our rights and freedoms.
“Abortion is about freedom, options, self-determination, and a free society. This SCOTUS decision completely strips us of our collective freedoms, taking away our power to control our personal decisions and handing it over to politicians. It will have a ripple effect around the nation with abortion bans already set to go into place and states like Florida planning to be next.
“We cannot forget that this fight goes beyond abortion, this decision is tied to other freedoms we have fought for, including same sex marriage and access to contraception.
“Though this is a major loss for gender equity and a horrific win for extreme conservatism we must remember that here in Florida, abortion is still legal. We must remember that Floridians overwhelmingly want abortion to remain legal, and generations before us have fought tirelessly to gain and protect the rights we have today. “This is not the time to shrink, or surrender. The antidote to despair is action. We are in a fight to make sure everyone has the power to control their own bodies, lives, and futures and despite this decision, cannot give up now.”
Hopefully, Governor, you will pay the full political price for this! It’s really something to know that the government literally owns our bodies and can force us to perform according to its will. For the first time in my life, I have a hint of what it must have felt like being a slave, being owned, being told what to do, being less-than, being treated with disrespect, being treated as if my life in a society has no value.
And, let’s understand that the anti-abortion movement is not all about religious beliefs at all. It’s about creating a slave class…lots of babies who will grow up poor and indoctrinated, who will work for piddling wages and do whatever the masters in control of the country tell them. And, these masters don’t care if those babies are Black or White or Brown. They just need lots of them to keep the top 2-3% of the population rich and powerful.
After all, it has been reported that Donald Trump paid for 8 different abortions for various women. Court records for Jane Doe vs. Donald Trump state he raped a 14 year old girl at Jeffrey Epstein’s house on 4 different occasions with an eye witness! There was no conclusion to that case. Why? She was likely paid off like Stormy Daniels? Clarence Thomas was accused of sexually harassing Anita Hill. Brett Kavanaugh was accused of attempted rape by Christine Blasey Ford. The Catholic Church and the Southern Baptists are embroiled in every manner of sexual scandal. So, these are not paragons of moral virtue…they have another agenda…one to punish and control women and another to create more wealth and power for themselves.
Millions of American men’s bodies were controlled by the government. The Draft.
While I support legal abortion until the child can live outside the womb, I take exception and it angers me the sexist comments by women though-out the country about control of their bodies, or bodily autonomy. My 21 year old son could be drafted in a blink of an eye, and my grandfather was drafted and forcibly placed on the front line in France. His abdomen was exploded onto the battlefield.
So, please stop with the “hands off my body” argument unless you are actively and equally working for a constitutional amendment outlawing the military draft.
These same women that drone on about their bodily rights would not say a word if a foreign power was poised to invade the United States.
The comments by the same republicans who continue to defeat common sense gun safety laws shows their hypocrisy better than anything I can write. They take NRA blood money and then when innocent children and teachers are massacred, they piously defeat any and all attempts to address the issue of allowing almost anyone access to a weapon of war. These same republican then make statements that assume that everyone has the same extreme christian religious belief as they espouse. The sum total is control of women’s bodies by corrupt, extreme, religious bigots, backed up by Supreme Court Justices who interpret the constitution as though is is still the 17 century, and who were appointed by an impeached President who tried to overthrow the lawfully elected President.
