The Florida Senate Democratic Caucus on Tuesday elected Sen. Shevrin Jones as its leader for the 2028–2030 term, setting in motion a multi-year leadership transition within the minority party.

Jones, a Miami Gardens Democrat representing Senate District 34, will assume the role following the 2026–2028 term of current Leader Designate Sen. Tracie Davis. The caucus is presently led by Senate Democratic Leader Sen. Lori Berman.

In a statement, Jones said he was “deeply honored and humbled” by the vote of his colleagues and pledged to help “lead and grow” the caucus in the years ahead. He pointed to housing affordability, health care access, voting rights and economic opportunity as central challenges facing Floridians, framing them as priorities for Senate Democrats.

“Florida faces profound challenges — from making sure every family can afford housing and health care, to protecting voting rights and expanding economic opportunity for working families,” Jones added. “As Democrats in the Senate, we have a responsibility to lead with courage, compassion, and a relentless commitment to the people we serve.”

Berman praised Jones’ record and leadership style, saying the caucus “will be in good hands.”

The Senate Democratic Leader serves as the top-ranking Democrat in the chamber, responsible for setting legislative priorities, coordinating strategy and representing the caucus in negotiations with Republican leadership.

Republicans hold a majority in the Florida Senate, leaving Democrats in the minority. Jones’ early designation provides several years to prepare for the role and signals a planned succession within the caucus.
