The University of Florida (UF) has been ranked the fifth-best public university in the country by Forbes in its 2026 list released Tuesday, placing highest among Florida institutions and 30th overall nationwide.
The rankings are based on a formula that weighs factors such as alumni earnings, graduation rates, student debt levels, and outcomes for low-income students. Forbes described the methodology as prioritizing return on investment and long-term value for graduates.
The top four public institutions are the University of California-Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, and the University of Michigan.
UF reported a record $1.33 billion in research funding over the past fiscal year, along with more than $560 million in new gifts and commitments. The school also received 91,884 applications for approximately 7,500 freshman spots for the Class of 2029, a 23 percent increase from the previous year.
“This is proof that the University of Florida is going forward at full speed. Our energy and our drive are stronger than ever, and we are not about to slow down,” said Mori Hosseini, UF Board of Trustees chair. “UF is a gem – a powerhouse of research and economic development, and an outstanding investment for the state of Florida. While other schools are stepping back, UF is leaning in and leading the way.”
Other major Florida institutions also appeared on the Forbes list, though ranked lower. Florida State University placed No. 72 overall, followed by the University of South Florida at No. 112. Florida International University ranked No. 150, the University of Central Florida was No. 156, and Florida Atlantic University came in at No. 214.
