Former US Congressman Dr. Dave Weldon announced his candidacy for Florida House District 32 on Monday. The district, currently served by Rep. Thad Altman who faces term limitations, covers much of Florida’s Space Coast and encompasses the cities of Viera, Rockledge, and Eau Gallie.

Through his tenure as a U.S. representative from 1995 to 2008, Weldon supported the shuttle program, the construction of the International Space Station, and the passing of the Commercial Space Act, while sitting on a range of committees including Appropriations, Science, and Health and Human Services.

Weldon also secured funds for the construction of the East Central Florida VA Clinic and the expansion of the Archie Carr Wildlife Refuge in Brevard County. He is the first candidate to file for the open seat.

“I am running for the Florida House to protect our rights and liberties and tackle the critical issues facing our families,” said Weldon. He commended Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Legislature for their conservative leadership and stated that he plans to uphold their values if elected. Weldon’s platform includes defending the Second Amendment, parental rights in education, the rule of law, low taxes, and a strong economy.

Weldon currently serves as Chairman of the Board for the Israel Allies Foundation and a trustee for the Florida Institute of Technology.

Should Weldon find success in the Republican primary race, he would be considered a favorite to win the state seat, as the area is strongly Republican with 44 percent of voters registered as Republican, compared to 26 percent as Democrat and 30 percent independent.

“State legislatures are the best protection against the dysfunction and big government overreach that has infected Washington DC today,” said Weldon. “I will take a scalpel to waste and bloat in the state budget and always uphold our conservative values. Now more than ever, we need proven conservatives in state government to safeguard Florida families from the Radical Left’s extreme agenda.”
