Saint-Gobain, a French building products manufacturer, announced plans this week to invest $235 million across the next two years in the expansion and modernization of its CertainTeed gypsum manufacturing facility in Palatka, Florida.
Per a company statement, the primary objective of the investment is to increase the production capacity of the existing plant while concurrently improving its energy consumption. The expansion of the facility will also involve the installation of energy-saving equipment and automation technology. The Palatka facility, which has been operational since 2001, is one of the largest gypsum plants in the United States.
The project has received monetary support through more than $7 million in cash benefits and high-impact investment tax credits. The State of Florida Capital Investment Tax Credit, Career Source Florida Quick Response Training Grant, grants from Putnam County, and the Clay Cooperative Economic Development Rate are among the funding sources. By breaking up compacted soil, gypsum allows for better root development and water infiltration, thus enhancing crop productivity.
