Gov. Scott Schedules Second Special Election for Miami-Dade

by | May 22, 2017

Add another special election to the ballot in Miami-Dade County this summer.

Gov. Rick Scott announced Monday that he has scheduled an election to replace state Rep. Jose Felix Diaz on the same day as an already scheduled election to replace Sen. Frank Artiles.

As required  by law, Rep. Diaz announced last week he would resign from his seat to run for Artiles’ Senate post.

Artiles resigned from his legislative seat in April after using racial slurs while having drinks with a couple of his colleagues at a private Tallahassee club.

A special primary election for the two seats, House District 116 and Senate District 40, will be held on July 25. The special general election for each contest will take place Sept. 26.

It will be up to Secretary of State Ken Detzner to set up a qualifying deadline for candidates in the House race. The qualifying deadline in the Senate contest is May 30-31.
