Lt. Gov. Jay Collins selected Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie as his gubernatorial running mate Monday night, announcing the choice roughly 24 hours before polls close in Florida’s Republican primary.
Guthrie spent 23 years in law enforcement before moving into emergency management, where his work has centered on hurricane response, disaster preparedness and other statewide emergencies.
The announcement comes as Collins trails U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds in the race. A James Madison Institute poll conducted July 20-26 found Donalds with 49% support among likely Republican primary voters, compared with 18% for Collins.
Collins described Guthrie as an experienced public safety official who has spent his career responding to emergencies and managing major challenges across the state. Guthrie spent 23 years in law enforcement before taking on roles involving hurricanes, natural disasters and other emergencies in Florida.
“Kevin and I didn’t meet at a fundraiser. We met on a mission. He’s spent his career running toward the problem, from 23 years in law enforcement to leading Florida through hurricanes, disasters, and some of our toughest moments,” said Collins.
“Together, we will protect our infrastructure, protect our people, and make sure Florida is ready for whatever comes next,” Collins added.
Collins described Guthrie as an “operator ready to serve” and said that under his administration the lieutenant governor’s office would not be treated as a ceremonial position.
