Florida State Senator Debbie Mayfield, R- District 17, was appointed Republican Leader for the 2020-2022 Legislative Term by Senate President Wilton Simpson yesterday.
Simpson called Mayfield, a “skilled and seasoned member of the Republican Caucus” and said, “Senator Mayfield’s service in both the House and Senate has provided her with institutional knowledge that is critical for helping guide major legislation through the process. She is a strong advocate for the priorities of her fellow Senators and knows how to build the consensus needed to bring key legislation across the finish line. Just last session, Debbie successfully carried a top priority of the Governor, served as chair of an Appropriations Subcommittee, and authored one of the most significant pieces of water quality legislation we have seen in many years.”
He continued, “I am confident that Debbie will be a strong, conservative leader for the Republican Caucus and am grateful that she has accepted this important responsibility.”
In Mayfield’s acceptance statement, she said, “The ongoing pandemic has impacted each of us, our families and our businesses. The road ahead is a difficult one, but I’m confident that together we can pass strategic and bold measures to deliver relief and recovery to Floridians and ensure our state economy prospers once again.”
Mayfield was elected to the Florida Senate in 2016, and reelected subsequently. Most recently, she served as chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Environment, and General Government. Previously, Leader Mayfield served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2008 to 2016.
