NextEra Energy, Inc. has been named to Fortune’s 2023 list of the “World’s Most Admired Companies” and ranked first in the electric and gas utilities industry for the 16th time in 17 years, the company announced. The company, which includes Florida Power & Light and NextEra Energy Resources, received the highest overall company scores in Florida. The company received top marks in innovation, people management, use of corporate assets, financial soundness, long-term investment value, and for the quality of products/services in the electric and gas utilities industry.
Several other Florida companies also made the overall list, including Lakeland-based Publix Super Markets, which scored 44th worldwide, down two places from last year. But NextEra is the only Florida-based company to score first place in its own industry (Fortune did not have enough data to rank Publix within the grocery industry).
NextEra is the world’s largest generator of renewable energy from wind and sun and a leader in battery storage. According to a press release, the company added over 8,000 MW to its backlog in 2022 and invested more than $19 billion in clean energy infrastructure, making it one of the largest capital investors in the US.
Despite a tough year in the stock market in 2022, NextEra Energy nevertheless outperformed the S&P 500 Index by nearly 10% last year.
Its flagship business unit, FPL, is the national leader in solar energy, adding 450 MW of cost-effective solar in service in 2022 and began construction of its first-of-its-kind “green hydrogen” facility. According to industry data, FPL consistently delivers low bills, high reliability, outstanding customer service, and clean energy solutions to its 5.8 million customers in Florida and was recognized as the most reliable electric utility in the nation for the seventh time in eight years. FPL also responded to two major storms in 2022 and was able to restore service to 2.1 million affected customers within eight days.
