Progressive estimates Milton losses

The Progressive Corp. on Tuesday estimated it will face $325 million in losses from damage to vehicles in Hurricane Milton and up to $200 million in property-insurance losses and other costs.

The insurer included the estimates in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Progressive offers property coverage through a network of homeowners insurance companies, according to its website. The $200 million estimate includes what are known as “allocated loss adjustment expenses,” which can include such things as adjuster costs and legal fees.

“We based these estimates on very early claims reporting information, our experience with severity and reporting patterns from many past storms, and several assumptions, including mix of claims,” Progressive said in the filing. “Reporting patterns, mix, and other assumptions (including those related to salvage) will likely differ from our expectations. We will continue to evaluate the impact of this catastrophe as more information develops. As further described in our periodic reports filed with the SEC, these estimates will change, and could change materially, as additional information develops and claims are reported.”

Milton made landfall Wednesday night in Sarasota County as a Category 3 hurricane and crossed through Central Florida. It also caused widespread damage in other areas of the Gulf Coast. In addition, the filing said Progressive sustained $401 million in vehicle losses in September from Hurricane Helene, $162 million in net property-insurance losses and $23 million of allocated loss adjustment expenses.

Helene made landfall Sept. 26 in Taylor County, before moving into Georgia and other states. The Progressive filing did not break down the Helene losses by state.
