Rep. Byron Donalds easily wins FL-19 primary, is set to retain House seat

Byron Donalds, the Trump-endorsed candidate for Florida’s 19th Congressional District, handily won the district’s Republican Primary, receiving just under 87 percent of the vote.

In the primary, Donalds defeated Jim Huff, his lone challenger.

Donalds presently serves as Representative for the 19th District, assuming the position in early 2021. Donalds’ time in office has been defined by stark conservatism including the advocation for lower taxes and the upholding of the Second Amendment.

In late 2020, Donalds was identified as a participant in the “Freedom Force”, a group of incoming House Republicans who “say they’re fighting against socialism in America”.

“Tonight, the hardworking men and women of Southwest Florida sent a resounding message throughout the district that they want a fearless constitutional conservative in Washington to combat the radical policies of the Democratic Party,” said Donalds. “I am incredibly honored and grateful to the Republican voters of Florida’s 19th Congressional District for their trust and confidence in me. Together we will secure another huge victory in November.”

During his campaign, Donalds received endorsements from the National Rifle Association (NRA), the House Freedom Fund, the Republican Liberty Caucus, and Sen. Rand Paul, among others.

In Congress, Donalds served on the House Committee on Budget, Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Committee, Economic and Consumer Policy Committee, Committee on Small Business, Economic Growth, Tax, and Capital Access Committee, and the Oversight, Investigations, and Regulations Committee.

When serving in the Florida House of Representatives in 2016, Byron sat on five committees and honorably served as the chairman of the Insurance and Banking Subcommittee.

Donalds’ state lawmaker tenure was highlighted by being named a ‘Champion of Economic Freedom’ for his A+ rating for the 2017 Legislative Session by Americans for Prosperity, who endorsed his bid for re-election.

Additionally, in the 2018 Legislative Session, he was the recipient of the Award for Conservative Excellence by the American Conservative Union Foundation.
