Republicans now outnumber Democrats in voter registration in Miami-Dade County, signaling a political shift in a county that for decades served as a cornerstone of Democratic strength in Florida.

Data from the Florida Division of Elections show 464,370 registered Republicans in Miami-Dade as of this month, compared to 440,790 Democrats. Voters with no party affiliation or who belong to minor parties total 429,099. The figures mark the first time in recent history that Republicans hold a registration advantage in the state’s most populous county.

“This is a total repudiation of the Democrats’ failed agenda. Miami-Dade is no longer their safe haven—it’s the beating heart of the Republican revolution,” said Evan Power, Chairman of the Republican Party of Florida. “We’re the party of hardworking families, Hispanic patriots, and communities demanding safe streets, top-notch schools, and a booming economy. Miami-Dade proves the unstoppable momentum of the Republican message.”

The development comes amid a broader realignment in Florida’s political landscape, where Republicans have steadily gained ground in voter registration. In 2018, Democrats held a statewide edge of roughly 300,000 voters. That margin has not only closed but reversed; Republicans now lead by more than 1.2 million registered voters statewide, according to state records.

In Miami-Dade, the shift follows a series of Republican gains in recent election cycles. Gov. Ron DeSantis won the county in his 2022 re-election campaign after narrowly losing it four years earlier. In 2024, Republican candidates carried several countywide offices, including sheriff, clerk of court, supervisor of elections and tax collector. At the presidential level, President Donald Trump narrowed Democratic margins in 2020 and expanded Republican support again in 2024.

Republican officials attributed the county’s registration shift to long-term organizing efforts, particularly among Hispanic voters, who make up a majority of the county’s population. Party leaders pointed to sustained outreach in Cuban American and Venezuelan communities, as well as an emphasis on messaging around public safety, education and economic growth.

“From Marco Rubio’s early victories to Ron DeSantis’s bold leadership, from Donald Trump’s commanding wins to our fearless donors and grassroots fighters, this is a victory for every Republican who refused to let Miami-Dade stay blue,” Power continues. “Miami-Dade is now a blazing red fortress, and we’re charging toward an even brighter future!”
