Sen. Marco Rubio is requesting $33 billion from the federal government to aid Florida’s recovery following the destruction left by Hurricane Ian.

The senior senator from the Sunshine State on Wednesday released details of an initial $33 billion major disaster supplemental spending measure. The request calls for more than $12 billion to go to the Army Corps of Engineers to help repair damages and bolster flood control measures. Another $10 billion would be allocated to replenish the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) disaster relief fun, which helps families with temporary housing, cleanup and financial assistance to meet critical needs such as food, water and prescriptions.

Additionally, $5 billion is earmarked for community block grants, with the Department of Agriculture receiving $3 billion to cover the loss of crops, bushes, trees, and vines.

“The strength and resilience of Floridians are inspiring, but we have a long recovery ahead. Given the scale and scope of the disaster – by some measures the fifth strongest hurricane to ever hit the United States – the federal government has an important role to play in facilitating Florida’s recovery. I plan to make sure our state receives the emergency relief it needs to fully rebuild,” said Rubio.

Hurricane Ian made landfall on Sept. 28, pummeling Florida’s Gulf Coast before continuing on a northward trek. The Category 4 storm left a path of destruction across the Sunshine State, producing catastrophic flooding and storm surge, while leaving more than 2 million Florida homes and businesses without power.

Thus far, the storm is responsible for over 100 deaths, with most occurring in Lee County in Southwest Florida.

Little Marco routinely votes against federal spending like this. Such a hypocrite. Also a coward: He skipped out on a debate with Val Demings because he knew she’d cut him to pieces. He’s toast.

What is the most glaring political issue facing Floridians ahead of Legislative Session?
