As the Sheriff of Bradford County with nearly 40 years of experience in Florida law enforcement, I have seen firsthand the devastating effects that low-level marijuana possession charges can have on individuals and their families. This November, we have a unique opportunity to make a significant change by supporting Amendment 3, which would legalize recreational adult use of marijuana in our state.
Throughout my career, I have witnessed countless lives unnecessarily derailed by simple possession charges. These charges often result in criminal records that can make it difficult for individuals to secure employment, housing, and educational opportunities. This cycle of punishment prevents Florida from truly living up to its reputation as the “Free State of Florida.” Everyone deserves a fair chance in life, and its time we stop criminalizing something that we know is safer than alcohol.
Moreover, my personal experiences have further solidified my support for Amendment 3. My brother, a veteran who served our country in multiple wars, found relief through medical marijuana. His journey opened my eyes to the potential benefits of cannabis for those suffering from various medical conditions. By legalizing recreational marijuana, we can expand access to this therapeutic option for many more Floridians who may benefit from its use.
Another pressing concern is the alarming rise in overdoses caused by marijuana laced with dangerous substances like fentanyl. Legalizing and regulating recreational marijuana will ensure that consumers have access to safe, tested products, reducing the risk of exposure to these lethal contaminants like fentanyl. I’ve seen it too many times, and I know that creating a legal market is a crucial way to get these tainted products off our streets and out of the hands of Floridians.
I’m a conservative with strong faith and family values. Those values are at the heart of my position on Amendment 3. To me, Amendment 3 represents a sensible and compassionate approach to marijuana policy. It will not only reduce the burden on our criminal justice system but also provide economic benefits through taxation and job creation. By voting in favor of Amendment 3, we can redirect law enforcement resources to more pressing issues, support our veterans and patients in need, and protect our communities from the dangers of unregulated substances.
I urge you to join me in supporting Amendment 3 this November. Let’s take a step towards a more just and equitable Florida, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive without the fear of unjust criminalization.
