State Board of Governors seeks 12 new trustees across Florida’s biggest universities

The Florida Board of Governors on Monday announced that the state university system is seeking applicants for 12 Board of Trustees vacancies across some of the state’s largest schools.

The 12 universities seeking a new Board of Trustees member include Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), Florida International University (FIU), Florida Polytechnic University (FPU), Florida State University (FSU), New College of Florida (NCF), the University of Central Florida (UCF), the University of Florida (UF), the University of North Florida (UNF), the University of South Florida (USF), and University of West Florida (UWF).

According to the Board of Governors, each university seeking applicants will have one vacancy on their Board open on Jan. 7th, except for Florida Polytechnic University, which had a Trustee position become available on Nov. 7th.

University trustees are limited to two five-year terms, and incumbents completing their first term must reapply if they want to serve another term.

“Serving as a trustee on the board of any of our institutions is a unique opportunity to help shape the future of the second largest public university system in the country,” said Brian Lamb, chair of the Board of Governors.  “Our System is working better together than ever before, and our trustees are a large part of that effort.  We are looking for applicants who are enthusiastic, diverse, and committed to raising the bar for the universities.”

Each state university has a 13-member Board of Trustees, which holds fiduciary responsibility for overseeing university operations, establishing cost-effective policies or regulations that are consistent with the Board of Governors’ regulations or guidelines, and implementing and maintaining educational programs that are in accordance with the university’s mission.

The Board of Trustees at a university is also responsible for conducting administrative candidate searches for positions like President, Vice President, and Provost, while also establishing campus policy, regulations, and guidelines.

Since 2020, nine state system university presidents have departed from their positions.
