In a rare moment of solidarity, all three 2022 Florida gubernatorial candidates called for support for those protesting in Cuba.
Democrat U.S. Representative Charlie Crist tweeted, “Oppressing citizens, violating fundamental human rights, bread lines, lack of vaccines and medical care, no opportunities, misery for millions — for decades. Cuba is living proof that socialism & communism don’t work.”
Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, also a Democrat said, “The Cuban people are exhausted from a lack of food, medicine, and other resources that don’t allow basic needs to be met. As they ask for our solidarity in their call for liberation from Cuba’s communist regime — we must answer that call and stand with them. It’s crucial that the world is aware of their struggle, everyone who supports freedom should join in helping spread their message through our nation and across the globe. Those of us fighting for democracy share the same goal, a democratic Cuba free from 62 years of communist oppression.”
Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis held a roundtable discussion in Miami today with Cuban-American leaders and elected officials, also supporting the Cuban people who are protesting the regime’s tyrannical grip on the island.
DeSantis said, “We stand with the people of Cuba. For far too long, a tyrannical communist regime has oppressed its people and used its power to silence any dissidents. Now, the Cuban people are making their voices heard to demand freedom and an end to this dictatorship.”
But it wasn’t all kumbaya. DeSantis called on the Biden Administration to take a strong stance against the oppressive, communist regime that has been using violence against its own people to crush dissent for more than six decades.
“While the Cuban people are showing tremendous courage, the Biden Administration is showing cowardice. The Biden Administration has been weak in its statements, blaming COVID-19, and not mentioning socialism or communism. While the president and his spokespeople issue empty rhetoric, the federal government is inexplicably lifting sanctions in Venezuela. Right now, the Cuban regime is taking the measure of Washington. The people of Cuba are rebelling against a dictatorial government, not seeking minor policy changes that would merely be akin to rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic,” DeSantis said.
