Congratulations, University of Central Florida Knights!
You’re college football’s national champions…well, uh, at least you are in the eyes of Gov. Rick Scott.
Hours before tonight’s kickoff between Alabama and Georgia in Atlanta (you know, the game UCF fans think they’re team should be playing in) the governor proclaimed his winner of the national title–in Florida.
There has been talk among legislators about the Legislature passing a resolution proclaiming the Knights national champs, but Scott beat them to the punch
“Florida is home to the country’s best college football, and this season, UCF proved to the world that they can beat any team,” Scott said in issuing the proclamation. “By having a perfect season and beating the only team that defeated both Alabama and Georgia this season, the UCF Knights are clearly champions. I wish both teams good luck tonight in Atlanta. Charge On.”
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Scott, Governor of the State of Florida, do hereby proclaim that the UCF Knights are this season’s best college football team and will be recognized as the 2017 College Football National Champions in Florida.
Scott laid out his case for proclaiming the Knights:
- An undefeated, 13-0 season
- American Athletic Conference champions, defeated Memphis Tigers 62-55
- Defeated Auburn in the Peach Bowl, 34-27
- Auburn beat both Georgia and Alabama in the regular season
