The University of Florida (UF) was ranked the nation’s top best-value public university for 2026 in a new SmartAsset analysis that measured affordability alongside student outcomes.
The New York-based financial technology company reviewed more than 500 public colleges and universities nationwide to identify schools that offer strong returns for students. To qualify, institutions had to post a cost of attendance below the median for comparable public schools. SmartAsset then ranked eligible universities using a composite score based on six-year graduation rates and median alumni earnings 10 years after first enrollment.
UF placed first in the ranking with a cost of attendance of $22,523, a 91% graduation rate and median alumni earnings of $71,588. Purdue University ranked second, followed by Baruch College in New York.
“This is yet another piece of evidence showing the University of Florida is an amazing institution and a tremendous asset for the great state of Florida,” said Mori Hosseini, UF Board of Trustees chair. “We have shown again and again that no other university in the country provides a better return on investment.”
Other Florida universities also placed in SmartAsset’s top 50. Florida International University ranked No. 8, the University of Central Florida ranked No. 10 and the University of South Florida ranked No. 11. The University of North Florida came in at No. 23, while Florida Atlantic University ranked No. 32.
SmartAsset said California had the most schools on the list, with 11 ranked institutions, followed by New York with eight.
