University of South Florida reaches highest ever placement in U.S. News & World Report rankings

The University of South Florida (USF) on Monday achieved its highest-ever placement in U.S. News & World Report’s annual ranking of the best colleges in America.

USF ranked 42nd among all public institutions and 97th among all public and private colleges in the latest rankings released today. This is the fourth consecutive year USF has been rated in the top 50 public institutions and the first time it has been listed in the top 100 among all universities.

The university has positioned itself as one of the fastest-rising institutions in the rankings. Through the past decade, USF rose 52 places among public colleges, from 94th to 42nd, and 73 places overall, from 170th to 97th.

“The University of South Florida is proud to achieve our highest-ever position in U.S. News & World Report’s rankings and to once again be recognized as America’s fastest-rising university,” USF President Rhea Law said. “USF’s standing in the rankings is a testament to the hard work and success of our faculty, staff and students, who make an impact in our communities every day. We will continue to help shape the future for our society as we pursue our goal of becoming a top-25 public university.”

USF’s swift rise in the rankings is due in part to a revamped state budget that last year alone allocated an additional $55 million for the school’s operational funds. USF was additionally granted $33 million to remodel critical Health facilities to add capacity for more nursing students and $37 million to Cyber Florida at USF to conduct a cybersecurity vulnerability assessment for the state and oversee training of government employees against cyber intrusions.

Last month the USF Morsani College of Medicine was ranked as the 46th best medical school by U.S. News and World Report’s medical school rankings, a 34-spot increase across the past eight years. Much like the parent university, USF’s college of medicine is one of the fastest-rising medical education institutes in America.

USF’s College of Medicine has seen a 42 percent increase in the total number of applications since 2014, as well as a jump of four points in average incoming MCAT scores. As a result, research funding has jumped 151.2 percent since 2014, accompanied by a 75 percent increase in National Institute of Health funding during the same span.

“Our sustained rise in national rankings reflects the rapidly increasing strength of our educational, research, and clinical missions at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. We are now competing with the nation’s most storied and respected programs,” said Dr. Charles Lockwood, senior vice president for USF Health and dean of the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. “These outstanding metrics also position us to attract the highest caliber students and faculty, further advancing our program into the national spotlight for its outstanding education, exceptional research, and world-class clinical care.”
