USF gets $6 million gift to enable biomedical engineering research

A $6 million anonymous donation made to the University of South Florida (USF) Department of Medical Engineering will help make way for new and enhanced research initiatives.

The funding, of which USF is a beneficiary, will serve to enhance the relationship between interdisciplinary medical and engineering teams in order to address some of the most pertinent issues in human health, according to the university.

The donation is the largest ever received by USF’s College of Engineering.

“We are so grateful to this alumna for honoring their experience at the University of South Florida by giving back in this way,” USF President Rhea Law said. “Their gift will help USF expand its research in biomedical engineering and further prepare the next generation of scientists, clinicians, and engineers for successful careers in this high-demand field.”

According to the Medical Engineering Department, the funding will assist in refining patient care by performing novel research, developing new technologies, and preparing students to succeed as interdisciplinary practitioners.

“USF is the reason I have the money to give,” said the anonymous donor. “This university did an excellent job preparing me for success. The company where I went to work sent recruiters strategically to USF because of its continued reputation for graduating exceptional talent. If that link had not occurred, I would not be in the position I am to give back today.”

USF is one of three public universities in the state of Florida, categorized as having Preeminent Research Status, based on its external research portfolio and research 1 ranking.

The university broke a fundraising record for the 2021-22 fiscal year, netting more than $151 million dollars from 34,000 donors. The raised funds are to be used for initiatives like new scholarships, curriculum enhancement, and new research endeavors, as well as facility renovations and a new on-campus football stadium.
