University of West Florida President Martha Saunders announced Monday she will step down from her position.
Saunders shared the news in a message to faculty and students, saying the decision came in accordance with the terms of her contract.
“In accordance with the terms of my contract, and after thoughtful reflection, I have made the decision to conclude my presidency,” she wrote. “This was not an easy choice. I know it may come as a surprise, and for some, a disappointment. Please know I did not make it lightly. I believe this is the right time — for me and for UWF.”
Saunders has led the university since 2017.
During her presidency, UWF achieved its highest enrollment figures, secured record fundraising totals, and earned national accolades, while maintaining a campus culture that prioritizes student success. Saunders highlighted the university’s ability to face challenges while keeping its values intact.
She said she will work closely with the UWF Board of Trustees and campus leadership to ensure a smooth transition. No timeline was provided for her departure.
“I will work closely with the Board of Trustees and the campus leadership to ensure a smooth transition. My commitment to this University and its people remains strong through my final day in office — and beyond,” Saunders said.
The University of West Florida is part of the State University System of Florida and serves more than 13,000 students across its campuses and online programs.
