Former State Attorney Andrew Warren garnered new endorsements from local elected officials and labor unions, bolstering his re-election campaign for Hillsborough County’s top prosecutor.

Former State Attorney Andrew Warren has secured a new wave of endorsements from local elected officials and influential labor unions in support of his re-election campaign for Hillsborough County’s top prosecutor.

Among the latest to endorse Warren are SEIU Florida, the West Central Florida Central Labor Council of AFL-CIO, Clerk of Courts Cindy Stuart, School Board Members Jessica Vaughn and Henry “Shake” Washington, and a cadre of former local officials including Doretha Edgecomb, Kimberly Overman, Mariella Smith, Tom Scott, Sandra Freedman, Rick Kriseman, Alan Clendenin, Gwen Henderson, and Gwen Miller.

Warren, a Democrat, expressed his gratitude for the endorsements, noting they reflect confidence in his leadership and his commitment to enhancing public safety and reducing crime.

“I’m honored to have the support of such a distinguished group of leaders and organizations,” he said. “Their confidence in my leadership is a testament to the progress we have made in enhancing public safety and reducing crime in Hillsborough County. Together, we will continue to build a safer community for everyone in our community.”

First elected in 2016, Warren is seeking a third term after he was suspended and removed from office by Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2022. DeSantis accused Warren of incompetence and dereliction of duty following his dismissal from office by Executive Order.

Notably, the governor claimed that Warren pledged not to enforce the state’s recently passed abortion law, as well as signed letters stating that he would not enforce laws prohibiting sex changes for minors. The suspension has been highly politicized and seen as a flagship moment of action for DeSantis, who directly referenced his removal of Warren during a Republican primary debate.

During a press conference earlier this month, DeSantis suggested that he would wield his newly-formed ‘Florida Freedom Fund political action committee to target the Hillsborough County State Attorney race.

In addition to the most recent endorsements, Warren has previously received support from several current and former state and local officials, including Congresswoman Kathy Castor, former Florida Commissioner of Education Betty Castor, former Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink, House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell, among others.
