Elon Musk throws support behind Ron DeSantis

Tesla CEO Elon Musk told his 98 million Twitter followers on Wednesday that he would likely back Gov. Ron DeSantis in a potential 2024 Presidential bid for the White House should the Florida governor announce an intent to run.

Musk made the statement after he posted on Twitter that he voted Republican for the first time in Texas’ 34th Congressional District race, which was won by GOP candidate Mayra Flores.

“I voted for Mayra Flores – first time I ever voted Republican,” Musk tweeted. “Massive red wave in 2022.”

A popular Tesla fan account then asked Musk if he would vote Republican in the upcoming Presidential race as well, to which Musk responded by saying he was unsure. When the account prodded which direction he is leaning, Musk responded with a single word: “DeSantis.”

Notably, Musk went on to explain that he sought to construct his own form of a political action committee that would financially support candidates of both parties that hold centrist viewpoints.

Florida’s top officials have a recent history of attempting to court Musk and his companies to move to Florida, including an orchestrated effort conducted by Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis to bring Twitter to The Sunshine State following the Tesla head’s purchase of the social media platform.

DeSantis personally and publicly favored Musk in the recent saga surrounding his takeover of Twitter, taking to the platform to push for the finalization of the deal.

“[Elon Musk’s] offer to buy Twitter is a good deal for shareholders and raises the prospect that the platform will be a place where free speech can thrive, not a tool for narrative enforcement, said DeSantis.

Musk has long been critical of Twitter’s history of account censorship and alleged suppression of free speech, previously musing the launch of his own social media platform and running adjacent to the ‘anti-woke’ rhetoric pushed by DeSantis and Patronis.

“As Florida’s Chief Financial Officer and a former small business owner myself, I have seen the challenges the woke agenda, and ESG ideology, has caused social media platforms like Twitter. Corporate glad-handing to online mobs has detracted from free speech and free thought,” said Patronis. “New ideas are blocked, or muted, and creativity is demonized. For example, Twitter’s recent de-platforming of the Babylon Bee is a total disgrace. I wholeheartedly agree with you that free speech is essential to a functioning democracy. In Florida, under Governor Ron DeSantis’ leadership, we value free speech and honest debate. We also know what it means to grow or maintain a business and the tools they need to succeed.”
