Florida’s average gas price fell below $3 per gallon this week for the first time since December, according to AAA.
As of Sunday, the state average stood at $2.97 per gallon, 13 cents less than a week ago and 55 cents lower than the same time last year. Florida’s average is now below the national average of $3.13 per gallon.
The current average price to fill a 15-gallon tank in Florida is $44.55, representing a savings of $8.25 compared to a year ago. More than 70% of Florida gas stations are now offering fuel below $3 per gallon. The lowest 10% of prices across the state average $2.76, while the highest 10% average $3.35.
“Low oil prices and strong gasoline production numbers have helped push gas prices to lows not seen in more than a year,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “However, it’s not clear how much lower prices will go. Springtime factors like refinery maintenance, strong demand, and the switch to summer gasoline typically keep upward pressure on prices at the pump.”
Crude oil settlement prices have remained below $70 per barrel since late February, contributing to downward pressure on retail fuel costs. However, seasonal factors such as refinery maintenance and the transition to summer-blend gasoline may affect prices in the coming weeks.
Among major metro areas, West Palm Beach-Boca Raton recorded the highest average price at $3.11, followed by Gainesville at $3.08 and Naples at $3.06. The lowest averages were found in Panama City and Crestview-Fort Walton Beach, both at $2.84, and Pensacola at $2.90.
