Florida gas prices could face upward pressure this week after crude oil prices rose sharply in overnight trading Sunday, though it remains unclear how quickly higher oil costs will reach consumers at the pump.

The statewide average price for gasoline stood at $2.89 per gallon on Sunday, according to AAA, up 1 cent from a week earlier but still 20 cents lower than the same time last year. The national average was $2.98 per gallon.

The potential for higher prices follows a jump in U.S. crude oil, which climbed above $71 per barrel, its highest level since June 2025. Oil markets reacted to renewed geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East, including concerns about possible disruptions to global supply and shipping routes. While the United States does not import oil from Iran, global oil prices can be affected by risks to production or transportation in the region.

AAA said it is too early to determine how much the increase in crude prices will affect Florida drivers but noted that higher oil costs typically translate into higher gasoline prices over time.

“AAA does not predict gas prices, and it is still too early to know how much of an impact rising oil prices will ultimately have at the pump,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “However, higher crude oil costs typically lead to higher gas prices, so we’ll be watching the market closely over the coming days.”

Seasonal trends are also influencing prices. Refineries are beginning the annual transition to summer-blend gasoline, which is more expensive to produce, while spring break travel generally increases fuel demand.

Regional prices across Florida varied Sunday. West Palm Beach-Boca Raton recorded the highest metro average at $3.05 per gallon, followed by Gainesville at $2.97 and Naples at $2.96. The lowest prices were in Crestview-Fort Walton Beach at $2.67, Panama City at $2.68 and Pensacola at $2.74.
