Florida Primary still ongoing despite coronavirus concerns

by | Mar 17, 2020

Despite the ongoing outbreak of coronavirus, Florida is keeping thousands of precincts open across the state, choosing to move forward with their primary.

Unlike Ohio, Governor Ron DeSantis disagreed with shutting the process down, saying the state will do it in a way that protects people.

“We’re not going to panic,” DeSantis said in a press conference on Monday. “I think you can do it in a way that’s going to protect people.”

DeSantis went on to say polls would remain open because many voters have made their choices already via mail or early voting. He believes because of this, polling places likely wouldn’t have large crowds on Tuesday. Nearly 2 million people have already cast their vote — by mail or at early voting centers — according to the Division of Elections.

Election officials in Florida also agreed, saying that the polls will be clean and safe to work in and vote at.

“We are aware of voters’ concerns over #COVID19. FL Dept of Health has assured healthy Floridians it’s safe to work the polls for & vote in Tuesday’s election. Supervisors of Elections are ensuring polls are prepared for voters,” said Secretary of State Laurel Lee.

If you do decide to vote, officials are asking voters to be patient and stay at least 6 feet away from each other at the polls.

Polls opened at 7 a.m. on Tuesday and will remain open until 7 p.m.
