Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins on Monday announced his candidacy for governor, entering a crowded Republican primary race to succeed term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Collins, a former Green Beret and one-term state senator, made the announcement on social media and in interviews, framing his campaign around military leadership, accountability, and crisis management. He said his experience leading troops under pressure prepared him to guide Florida through hurricanes, economic uncertainty, and population growth.
“I’m running for Governor because leadership is forged under pressure, not in soundbites,” said Collins. “I served over 23 years in the United States military, mainly as a Green Beret, where accountability is real, decisions have consequences, and service comes before self. That experience shaped how I lead and why I believe public office is a public trust.”
Collins was appointed lieutenant governor last year after Gov. DeSantis reshuffled his administration following the 2024 elections. While closely aligned with the governor on policy, DeSantis has not endorsed a successor and has signaled he intends to stay neutral during the primary.
The Republican primary now consists of Collins, U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds who has the endorsement of President Donald Trump, Former House Speaker Paul Renner and James Fishback.
On the Democratic side, former U.S. Rep. David Jolly and Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings are among the candidates positioning themselves for the general election.
