Latest Putnam television ad targets illegal immigration and Trump’s base, DeSantis Campaign fires back

Republican candidate for governor Adam Putnam is targeting illegal immigration in his latest television spot (see below) produced by Putnam’s political committee, Florida Grown. The 30-second ad reiterates Putnam’s commitment that, as governor, he will not allow Florida tax dollars to be spent on detaining criminal illegal aliens.

“There are many reasons to be mad about illegal immigration. Here’s one we can’t stand for…today taxpayers in Florida are paying nearly a hundred million dollars a year to imprison criminal illegal aliens,” Putnam says in the ad. “A hundred million dollars to feed, clothe and house criminal illegal aliens.”

The spot will begin airing Tuesday statewide on broadcast and cable channels.

The ad features Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco and Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods. They are among 45 Florida sheriffs who recently endorsed Putnam for governor.

“I’m Adam Putnam, and we need to support President Trump’s plan to secure our borders and ban sanctuary cities. We need to protect taxpayers and deport violent criminals now,” Putnam goes on to say in the spot.

Putnam’s GOP opponent Ron DeSantis was quick to respond to the release of the ad with his campaign spokesman accusing Putnam of attempting to rewrite his political record on immigration.

“There’s no doubt that Ron DeSantis exposed Putnam’s weak record on immigration in front of millions of viewers during the debate and now he’s on the defensive. Putnam’s record on immigration is crystal clear,” said David Vasquez, DeSantis’ pres secretary. “He he voted with Nancy Pelosi against securing our southern border, supported the Gang of Eight Amnesty bill and fought against E-Verify in Florida. Suddenly facing a conservative opponent, Putnam is convinced he can somehow rewrite his own record to win over Florida conservatives.”

The new television ad targets a popular issue among President Donald Trump’s support base, illegal immigration. Trump has been supportive of  DeSantis posting a full endorsement of the Florida congressman last month on Twitter.

“Congressman Ron DeSantis, a top student at Yale and Harvard Law school, is running for Governor of the Great State of Florida,” Trump tweeted. “Ron is strong on Borders, tough on Crime & big on Cutting Taxes – Loves our Military & our Vets. He will be a Great Governor & has my full Endorsement!”

Recent polls have shown Putnam holding a commanding double-digit lead over his GOP opponent, U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis. But, over the weekend, the DeSantis campaign released two polls, including an internal survey showing him to be the front-runner.

The Capitolist’s own Horserace Index, which uses a weighted average of the polls taken to date, shows Putnam holding a 13-point advantage — 31 percent to 18 percent.
