Former state representative LaVon Bracy Davis won the Democratic nomination in the special election for Senate District 15 on Tuesday night, defeating three other candidates in a race prompted by the death of Sen. Geraldine Thompson earlier this year.

Bracy Davis received 42.96 percent of the vote, according to the Orange County Supervisor of Elections. Attorney Coretta Anthony-Smith finished second with 28.31%, followed by former U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson at 16.72% and former state Sen. Randolph Bracy, her brother, with 12.02%.

“Representative Lavon Bracy Davis has a wealth of legislative experience and a long history of fighting for the rights of Floridians,” said Senate Democratic Leader Lori Berman. “As Senator Geraldine Thompson’s hand-picked successor, I know she’ll work every day to honor the late Senator’s legacy. I have every confidence that she will be elected as the next member of the Florida Senate Democratic Caucus, and we look forward to having her join us in the fight for a more affordable Florida.”

The Special Election for Florida Senate District 15 will be held on September 2, 2025.

The vacancy in Senate District 15 was created after Thompson, a longtime lawmaker and prominent figure in Central Florida politics, died in February following complications from surgery. Bracy Davis, who represented parts of west Orange County in the Florida House, resigned her seat to run for the Senate.

She now advances to a Sept. 2 general election against Republican Willie Montague. The district, which includes Apopka, Eatonville, and parts of Ocoee, leans Democratic.
